CHAPTER FOURTEEN

‘Beware the Sorceror Sickness, the price all mages must pay for magic, the Magicians above all…’

—The Magician Code

T erent’s main inn, The Rearing Stallion, was a bustling hive, even though the sun had set. Patrons spilled across the tables, hallway and corridors, with scarcely room to breathe amidst the boisterous cheering and singing. Coloured banners and lanterns hung between the rafters, and disc-shaped candles were set in the windows and doorways. I rubbed my eyes, the décor stirring fond memories. Time had passed so swiftly since I’d left Begara, I hadn’t realised it was the Midsummer Festival already. Any other time the sight might have brought on homesickness, but right now, as I was forced between crammed bodies and choking on the aroma of cider, pipe smoke and spiced delicacies, I had more than enough to keep me occupied.

Lahara kept her hand on my shoulder, her height giving an advantage as she also searched for our auburn-haired Guardsman. Since entering the city, she’d been focused on finding him, having pushed away further thoughts about her former home. Though I remained curious for details, I’d decided not to pry, as time was not on our side and we needed to make a proper plan.

At last, Lahara spotted our quarry. Zephyr was nursing a mug of ale near the rear wall. I almost didn’t recognise him out of uniform. He sported an olive-green longcoat with silver buckles, along with a tan shirt and white trousers. His tags rested at the hollow of his throat, gleaming in the candlelight.

“Hey, Zephyr!” Lahara called above the uproar, and Zephyr jerked his head up. His face flooded with panic. Quickly I raised my hand and flashed a reassuring smile.

“Sorry we’re late.” I shuffled onto the bench beside him. Lahara hunched her arms and ended up half-sitting on my lap. I patted her thigh. “I brought backup, as promised.”

Zephyr paled.

“L-Lahara,” he stuttered, “I…”

“Good to see you looking well, Zephyr,” Lahara cut in. “Looks like you didn’t need those extra potions, after all.”

“Uh, yeah.” Zephyr peered into his drink, rubbing the back of his neck.

“It would’ve been nice if you’d said goodbye, though.” Lahara jabbed his shoulder.

“I never meant to come across as ungrateful,” Zephyr murmured. “Enchanter potions, they don’t always sit right with me. And I was in a hurry.”

“It’s okay,” Lahara said. “Jessie’s told me everything. Besides, you’re not a child, you’re allowed to make your own decisions. Reckless and foolhardy as they may be.”

Zephyr pouted.

“I haven’t done anything reckless.” He swirled the dregs in his mug. “I followed Kairav to his camp and kept an eye on him. I haven’t spoken to him yet.”

“So, what’s he been up to?” I asked.

“He’s hiding on a hillside near the East Pass.” Zephyr ran a finger over his mug. “He’s been targeting travellers on the road, I think to get more blood for the sword. I’ve managed to thwart most of his attempts, but he still succeeded at least once before I caught up to him.”

I cursed, and Lahara clenched her jaw.
